I am very proud to have been awarded one of the 2012 “People Helping People” scholarships. To have been recognized with this $10,000 scholarship from SECU was a great surprise and very much appreciated. I will be attending UNC Chapel Hill this fall, and this scholarship will help me pay my tuition and allow me to work less hours during the semester to have time to continue my volunteer activities. SECU is helping me achieve both my educational and personal goals.

I am extremely grateful to the SECU Foundation for selecting me as a 2012 scholarship recipient. When my high school counselor notified me that I had won $10,000 in scholarship funds, I was especially thankful. The principal at East Lincoln High School made a public announcement that I had won the SECU "People Helping People" Scholarship, which allowed my peers to join in celebrating the occasion. My family appreciated the financial assistance and was so proud of my accomplishment. The Lee College of Engineering has additional expenses, so the generosity of the SECU Foundation has relieved the financial burden associated with attending The University of North Carolina in the fall of 2012. Thank you so much. I have attached a graduation pose to show my elation.

It was not only a surprise but also a great honor to receive the "People Helping People" Scholarship! The support and generosity of the SECU Foundation has allowed me to follow my dreams and explore my hidden passions. Thanks to the scholarship, I will be pursuing a Bachelor's degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall where I plan on studying Public Health with a focus in Nutrition. To quote my essay for this scholarship, "As I continue to submerge myself in academic and extracurricular activities throughout college, it is with the philosophy 'People Helping People' that I have and will continue to step forward to make a difference in the world we live in today." Thanks again, SECU, for believing in me!

One of the most fundamental principles that should guide a strong and healthy nation is that we all help each other to become better people, one person, one family and one community at a time. My name is Kyle Benson and I am a 2010 recipient of the "People Helping People" scholarship. I am so happy, thankful and proud to be selected for this award. Not only will it help my parents who are trying to put twins through college at the same time, it will also help me to earn my degree in Appropriate Technology from ASU. This will continue the theme of the scholarship as the degree will enable me to help others and hopefully the planet through sustainable development initiatives utilizing various green technologies for the future. I am so thankful that we have a scholarship that rewards people for serving others. Thank you SECU!

Now, I can focus contently on my studies and not worry how I will pay for college. Thank you very much.

Thanks so much to SECU for their generous contribution to my future! My education at NC State has been such an adventure so far: working hard in all of my design classes, while serving as the Vice President of the cross country club team. I look forward to all of the architecture projects in the coming years, and all of the new friends that I will make! The "People Helping People" scholarship has really helped to make that happen for me, and allow me to fully experience college and pass on the generosity that was given to me!

Each year that I have been at NC State, I have become more grateful for the "People Helping People" scholarship I received in high school. The scholarship has helped me not only achieve the education I need to succeed in the world, but it has also helped give me the chance to see and do things I never could have done otherwise. From tutoring local at-risk children, to backpacking in Zion National Park, to studying abroad at Oxford University, I never could have connected with the world in the ways I have been able to by attending NC State as a recipient of the "People Helping People" scholarship! Thank you SECU, for supporting me and others through college!

Thanks to this scholarship, I am able to double major in Architectural Engineering and Computer Science. It helps to pay for books I need for classes and ease the financial burden. I was honestly not planning on attending college if I could not find the funds to help support me and lessen my parent's financial obligations.

This scholarship was the foot in the door to help me double major at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. I am now very involved in my majors' extracurricular activities. My GPA is also in the top ten percent of the whole student population here.

I am honored to be selected for the "People Helping People" Scholarship. My dad passed away when I was only 4 years old so it has been only my mom and me since then. The financial support and recognition of the dedication to school work, sports and the community over the years are extremely rewarding. The scholarship will enable me to pursue my dreams and passion for the outdoors and photography. I will be attending Appalachian State University majoring in Technical Photography and Outdoor Recreation Management. Over the last few years I have been able to combine my photography skills along with taking care of young campers at Camp Occoneechee. Through my photography and working with children I hope to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

When I realized that I had received the SECU "People Helping People" scholarship, I was ecstatic. Since then, the scholarship has been such a blessing in alleviating much of the financial strain that college imposes. I am currently pursuing my bachelor's degree in biology, with a minor in secondary education at Elizabeth City State University. I plan to continue my education and hope to achieve my master's degree in either biotechnology or science education. I would like to thank the SECU Foundation from the bottom of my heart for greatly assisting in making my college dreams come true. God bless!
